| The
Building |
|
More
than a farmhouse, Podernovo is a hamlet that is part of Santa
Maria farm, an ancient, still working, wide farm which used to
be one of the most important and dynamic estates of the area.
Podernovo is situated on a green hill overlooking of Bolsena Lake
in a wonderful natural scenario, along "Francigena Road"
- nowadays only a path for pedestrians and cyclists - which used
to be the main road for pilgrims coming from Gaul (the ancient
France) to Rome.

Podernovo's
main building goes back to the XIX century and shows, with its small tower
and black stone walls, a beautiful example of the past rural architecture
of the area. The building has been completely restored in its original
shape and it is made up of a main part and a rural one. All around the
hamlet guests can enjoy a vast Mediterranean wood, plenty of oaks, privets,
hollies, brooms, laurels and so on, where, undisturbed, live and nest
blackbirds, magpies, hoopoes, owls and many other species of birds and
squirrels. |

Close to
Podernovo main farmhouse is still visible part of the ancient Roman
road whose construction was ordered by the Emperor Trajan to make the
journey to Chiusi shorter (the distance was reduced by approximately
10 kilometres). The wonderful natural scenario is completed by the sight
of the entire lake basin, which lies at less than one kilometre from
the hamlet, so that visitors can easily walk to have a cooling swim.
